Route driver has early morning road encounter near Atlanta
(Show Printer-friendly Version)

YEAR: 2004

SEASON: Summer

MONTH: August

DATE: 10th

STATE: Texas

COUNTY: Cass County

LOCATION DETAILS: I was on Hwy 59 heading north into Atlanta. I couldn't have been more than 2 to 5 miles south of Atlanta at the time. I only got a look at it for no more than 4 or 5 seconds.

NEAREST TOWN: Atlanta

NEAREST ROAD: Hwy 59

OBSERVED: I was headed north on Hwy 59 into Atlanta, Texas. I was the only one on the road for as far as I could see. I came to an S curve in the road. It went to a curve to the right and then back to a curve to the left. I made the first curve and when I was coming aroung the other curve I saw this huge beast just step over a six strand barbed wire fence. I slammed on my brake and then just took off. I was scared to death. This was no man and damn sure not a bear.It had to be at least 8 to 8 1/2 feet tall and weight no less than 500.bs. I weigh 230lbs and it was at least twice my size! It's hair was a really dark brown and not as long as I thought it would be. It looked to be covered with 6 to 8 inch hair. It's chest and abdomen didn't seem to be as hairy and I could see it's eyes, nose, and mouth, so I assume they were not hairy either. As I've said before when I made the curve it was stepping over a 4' fence like it was nothing. It saw me and didn't run, but just turned it's head and continued to walk down the fence line. I should have taken a longer look, but I was really freaking out at this point so I just drove on into Atlanta.

OTHER STORIES: It just happened last night. This is the first time I've ever seen a bigfoot!

TIME AND CONDITIONS: 1:30 to 1:50 a.m. It had been raining earlier that day. Rains had quit. The night was clear.

ENVIRONMENT: Wooded. I couldn't see any particular water sources, but this whole area is nothing but ponds, lakes, rivers, and creeks. There would be abundant water sources all around the area. There were cattle ranches and cattle dairies all through that area.

Follow-up investigation report:

I talked to the witness about his report. He is a truck driver and twice weekly drives the particular route on which he had the encounter. It is a midnight run originating in Tyler and concluding in Texarkana. I have driven this very route many times en route for Atlanta, the place where I was born. It was just prior to Atlanta on Highway 59 that the witness saw what he believed to be a bigfoot.

Northeast Texas is a place of many bigfoot anecdotes, so the subject was not unknown to the witness. The witness remarked that upon seeing the animal, although he had always suspected its existence, he then realized that bigfoot was truly no myth. He was amazed that he had been so lucky to have seen what he truly believed was a bigfoot.

The witness knows that his report is only anecdotal, and there will be many who will not believe it, but he is unperturbed. In his own words, he knows what he saw. Further, he was in awe and struck by the sheer size of the creature and how it easily cleared the barbed wire fence before walking down the fence line. The way that the animal looked at the witness frightened him. He did remember an eye shine, and described it as a “photo eye shine.” The witness went on to further describe the creature as being dark in color, and probably a “dark brown.” The head seemed to be somewhat crested.

I inspected the site 11 August 2004, and found no discernable, definitive evidence of a sasquatch. However, there were a couple of indistinct impressions in the soil, and the vegetation along the fence in the vicinity of the crossing had the appearance of having been trampled by something large for a stretch of 100 feet or so. Even though rain had fallen in the area, no distinguishable tracks were found. The general area is indeed one that fits within what is thought to be typical, southern sasquatch habitat. Creeks, marshes, and thick, nearly impenetrable woods surround the location of the encounter. In addition, the Sulphur River is just a few miles north of the site.
