Family sightings over 100 years in Fayette and Fulton Counties
(Show Printer-friendly Version)

YEAR: 1880-1980's

SEASON: Spring

STATE: Georgia

COUNTY: Fayette County

LOCATION DETAILS: Most sightings happen in Fayette County between
the Hopeful Community to just over the Futon county line and from there on a
stright path up Rivier town road to near the Douglas county line.
These stories go from late 1800's to mid 1980's
Two family members at seperate eras saw a creature. and others were told about same area.

NEAREST TOWN: Hopefull Community

NEAREST ROAD: Hwy 92 and also River Town Rd.

OBSERVED: Two stories of family member encounters but first I tell the
origins and why it has this particular name. Story told by my late Great
Grand Mother.

Two spinster sisters lived in Fayette County by the last name of Comference. One night the sisters (as told by them in town the next day)
said something got under there home and seemed to be confused as to how to get out from under the house and started "Screaming like a woman" and in
atemts to stand upright banged the wooden floor planks with such force they buckled.
It found its way out and ran screaming into the woods. From what they saw
it had a dark Geayish hair covering it's body and ran like a man.

Next day when the story was told in town The creature was dubbed "The
Comference Booger".
Because of things happening in the Cochran mill area it is also called the "Cochran Booger".

Now, The story of the encounter my Great Grand Father had most likely between 1900 and 1910.
On his horse and buggy on more than one ocassion he would have to pass the
"Peters Woods and Peters Swamp" Going up West Bridge Road after passing Peters Road going to Wagon Wheel Trail.
Just as he would be about 300 yards or so from the bridge, Something would run along side him in the woods, The fast he went the thing would match the speed. The story goes the thing would then jump on back of the buggy and
"Scream Like a woman" shake it and just at the bridge would jump off and go back in the woods.Once meat bought at the butcher shop was taken from the buggy as the thing jumped off. Same Dark Grayish Hair and The phrase Great
Grand Father used was "Stood stright up on two legs like it had good scense".
(There is also another situation at the time that could explain away a true creature that I did find in the county history book).

Next family member encounter.
In or around 1985 or 86, My uncle lives in this same area about a mile or
just over away from where the above was suposed to have happened.

Just a small distance over the county line in Fulton county.
My Uncle lives in a clearing in the woods, The drive way cuts up into the woods and there are two other homes beside his.
At the time before he retired he worked a shift at a local plant. One morning at about 4:30 a.m
He went to take the trash out to the burning pile.
It was dark and as he came to the bottom of the steps he heard a noise at the wood pile.
When he looked in the direction he said he heard a God Awful High pitch scream then what ever it was totally knocked down the wood pile and threw a
peice of heavy wood a good distance toward the front of the property and ran into the woods.
He didnot realize the damage to the wood pile until day light. His wife
wanted him to go back out with the shot gun but he would not do it. I asked him what it looked like and he said "Hell, I don't know I wasn't fired up to get a look at it more than I was to get back in the house.I was running up the steps and it was running to the woods"

There are friends to the family that live in the area that have heard or
have long gone relitives that have told of these Woman like screams thru many years.

"Screams like a woman" was always the biggest phrase when I head these stories.

I know when I am in the area alone in the woods I feel as if I am being
watched, so much so I just dont go back in the woods anymore. and my mother also said the same about feeling as if being watch about the same area when
she played there as a child in the early 1940's.

ALSO NOTICED: High pitched screams, the feeling of being watched. Things crossing the roads in front of cars.

OTHER WITNESSES: Many over a 100 year period.

ENVIRONMENT: In the Fayeet area was wood and field and up untill the late
70's a swampy bog untill drained by Georgia power. (This is a heavy activity area from what I have heard.
Also the Fulton end in an 800 acre nature preserve called Cochrans Mill
with to main tributaries,Big Bear and Little Bear creek Thick woods of various terain ans some light swamping.
