Fisherman describes being paralleled by a whistler after fishing the Blue River outside Manhattan
(Show Printer-friendly Version)
COUNTY: Riley County
LOCATION DETAILS: Its right up Tuttle Creek Road in Manhattan KS. Head north on Barnes Rd and you go right over the river. That's where you park and go down to fish.
NEAREST TOWN: Manhattan
NEAREST ROAD: Barnes Rd
OBSERVED: My brother-in-law and I were finishing up fishing the Blue River one night and were making the walk back to the car. Its probably a half mile walk or so on like a dry rocky edge of the river. Along the whole side of the edge where we were walking is lined with trees decently thick. Anyway we grabbed our gear and were walking when I heard what sounded like someone walking along with us but up in the tree area (like 50ft from us). So after i heard it I stopped and it stopped. I started and it did again to. So we kept walking but that's when I decided to start whistling at it and sure enough it whistled back. The whole ten minute walk it walked with us and would whistle back and forth with me. Now i can't say it wasn't someone messing with us but its a pretty country area and i just couldn't see anyone going through the trouble for not much fun.
OTHER WITNESSES: Yes 1 other witness
TIME AND CONDITIONS: It was late maybe 2am. It was a clear night as for weather but the moon want bright. Not windy either.
ENVIRONMENT: Its alot of farm land but there are trees and the river less right to a big lake.

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Carter Buschardt:
I spoke with witness on 10/22/2012. I will add a few minor details not put in initial report. The tree line is on a ridge above where he and the other witness were walking. It slopes up and away from the path, and then back down and towards the path. He exchanged whistles 6-7 times and all whistles were virtually identical to his. Single whistle answered with single, double answered with double. There were no other additions to the story other than the above. He is not aware of any other stories or rumors concerning creature sightings in the area.
Paralleling by something or someone unseen is commonly reported on expeditions and in areas with a history of bigfoot activity, as well as human-like whistles.
Added comments from witness: On 12/26/2012 witness answered my follow up question as to whether he had caught any fish. He had not caught any fish, but had a cooler with very stinky catfish bloodbait. This could be one explanation as to why he may have been followed, creature thinking there was some fresh caught fish to be had. Witness also added that the area is a wooded area and probably has abundant wildlife, but he was not paying attention to that and he had actually not been to this particular spot before.
Update 9/2/17. County is either Pottawatomie or Riley, most likely Riley. CB
