Submitted by witness on Monday, May 21, 2012.
Unexplained loud banging and whoops heard by a homeowner near Virginia Beach
(Show Printer-friendly Version)

YEAR: 2012

SEASON: Spring

MONTH: May

DATE: 19

STATE: Virginia

COUNTY: Virginia Beach City County

LOCATION DETAILS: Near Fenwick Drive, by the canal on Princess Anne Rd.

NEAREST TOWN: Virginia Beach

NEAREST ROAD: Princess Anne Road

OBSERVED: About a week ago I woke up early in the morning, about 3:30 a.m. to a loud banging noise, like multiple woodblocks slamming. It happened several times for about 10 minutes then ceased. I thought nothing of it. Then two mornings ago I awoke and went out back to let my dog out, around 7 am, and I heard a loud clear whoop noise coming from the same general direction of my back yard. Take note, my back yard is miles of state property containing dense woods, and a canal. I have yet to hear anything like that again.

OTHER WITNESSES: No other witnesses.

OTHER STORIES: No. I've never even heard anything like this in my life.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: Very early morning. It was warm out with absolutely no wind or other animal noises. It was almost too quiet. There was no light.

ENVIRONMENT: Dense forest, regular trees not pine. With a canal a mile or so back.

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator D.K.:

After conversing with the witness, and studying the region of his incident, the following information may be added to this report:

-The witness states the wooden, banging sound from the dense forest was so loud, it was difficult to estimate exactly how far away it originated from, but believes 70 yards to the south east is a good approximation.

-Later, when two whoops were heard, they came from a north easterly direction, but approximately the same distance away.

-Since these occurrences, the witness has heard no other unusual sounds from this area.

-The area of the incident is a wide, densely forested canal zone, that runs north to the Chesapeake Bay and south to the Albemarle Sound in North Carolina. Within three miles of the witness' observance, the canal enters a vast agricultural region and intersects other heavily forested waterways which connect to the Great Dismal swamp, about 20 miles to the west. The Great Dismal has received a number of sighting reports over the years.
