Two witnesses recall sighting as teens near Monticello
(Show Printer-friendly Version)

YEAR: 1986

SEASON: Summer

MONTH: June

DATE: 15

STATE: Georgia

COUNTY: Jasper County

LOCATION DETAILS: The closest reference point I can give is Pennington Road and Hughes Road. I would have to ride back out that way and locate the property, but I'm sure that I could. There was some logging going on back then, so there were lots of logging roads for us to play around on.

NEAREST TOWN: Monticello

NEAREST ROAD: Pennington Road

ALSO NOTICED: As I stated above there was alot of logging going on. As a reult, it created it a creek bottom or bog at the back of a field where the forest started. My buddy and I would ride our bikes down there and watch the deer water/feed and sometimes catch glimpses of other animals. There was a drop off, due to the logging, so it was easy to stay out of sight. On this particular night, there were some does feeding/watering and tey jerked around looking behind them, up the hill, flagged and ran. We sat there waiting to see what spooked them and then we saw this creature walking upright across the hill, but downward, toward where the deer were. We had never, or since, seen an animal move with that kind of speed, with that kind of lazy movement. It was easy for it to had cover a couple hundred feet in the seconds it took us to recover from the shock of what we were seeing. It appearred to be at least 7 feet, maybe taller, but the strides were unbelievable. There was no noise. No step noise, no breathing, no nothing. Broad, muscular shoulders. Long, thick arms (almost knee length). Head looked smaller, almost out of proportion for the body. We got on our bikes and rode home as fast as possible. 14 year old boys, but we were still visibly upset and crying to my Mother over what we saw. It took about 20 years for the two of us to get to where we could talk about that day without getting chills up our spine. Neither of us has ever went back to that piece of property. My house was across the road from the property. I lived in that house for a few more months and refused to venture outside after dark, even with threats from my parents. My friend was the same way, but he lived 10 miles away.

OTHER WITNESSES: Yes, a friend of the same age.

OTHER STORIES: At that time, I had heard of Bigfoot, but had never really paid any attention to what it was about. I probably could'nt even tell you what it was supposed to look like. Since then, I do a lot of study about it and have done some field work in Jasper County, but with no results.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: Late Evening. Lighting was good. Clear day, though the sun was starting to set, still good lighting.

ENVIRONMENT: Hard wood forest, small branch or creek bottom, small rolling hills

Location of Sighting

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator R. Monteith:

I interviewed both gentlemen via telephone. The primary witness who submitted the report is a police detective and Army veteran. The encounter occurred when he was 14 years old. He and his best friend (who is still his best friend) were riding their bicycles near his home one evening. The property is rural, and loggers had clear cut large areas about a year before. The area had not been replanted yet, and blackberry bushes had grown over the clear cuts. The boys rode down a logging road to a hollow where they always found deer feeding. The bank was high, and he even remembers telling his friend that the winds would be favorable for them to watch without the deer catching their scent. They sat on their bikes behind blackberry briars and watched the deer. When the deer alerted, they searched the hill looking to see what alerted them. They then saw a very tall man swiftly walking toward the deer. It was about 150-200 yards away, under the canopy of some hard wood trees. They both thought at first it was a 6’5” tall neighbor wearing dark clothing. As it rapidly walked closer, they realized it was much taller than the neighbor and wasn’t a man. When it was about 30 yards away from them, they identified it as a bigfoot. Frightened, both boys flipped their bikes around and rode away. The witness remembers as he pedaled home pulling out his pocket knife in fear. The boys spoke about it at first to their parents, who didn’t want to talk about it. They then didn’t speak of it for years even with each other, but do now. After the encounter, both did not go out at dusk or dark again. His friend would not return to his house to play – they would play at the friend’s house which was miles away.

Other details remembered and confirmed by both witnesses :

-The bigfoot was at least 7 feet tall.

-It was bipedal with a very smooth, fluid, and fast gait.

-It had long legs, and was swinging its long arms as it walked with purpose.

-It had a V shaped torso with big shoulders and slim hips.

-Its color was dark brown or black and solid in color.

-It made no noise walking, even when it got close to them.
