Golfer smells awful odor and sees upright shadowy figure on Washington State golf course
(Show Printer-friendly Version)

YEAR: 2010

SEASON: Fall

MONTH: November

DATE: 11th

STATE: Washington

COUNTY: Snohomish County

LOCATION DETAILS: 2nd hole short 9 course, to the west in a draw.

NEAREST TOWN: Marysville

OBSERVED: I was golfing alone at the Battle Creek golf course on Veterans Day at about noon. I was just going to play the short 9 hole par3 course. There were very few people on the course and only 4 cars in the parking lot including mine. A woman and her son (about 11) and daughter (about 10) were just finishing the course and going to play the course again. I offered to let them go first but she insisted I play ahead of them. After teeing off on the 2nd hole I was walking toward the green and about half way there a sudden awful smell hit me (like that of a dead animal) and I immediately stopped and look around my close proximity and saw nothing. I then scanned the woods to the west and saw an upright shadow about 100 yards away move quickly between the trees and disappear. I didn’t see any descriptive features. It was overcast and the woods were darker. I just remember an instant feel of concern/fear with the hair standing on the back of my neck. I continued golfing with the family one hole behind me throughout the course. I never smelled the scent again anywhere on the course but felt watched on occasion.
I served in the Army as an Infantryman, Paratrooper, and Ranger for 20yrs and have spent a lot of time in woods in different areas of our country and never smelled anything like that until I served in Iraq. I’ve never felt that way in the woods either.

ALSO NOTICED: The shadow was not near the ground. It seemed up right.

OTHER WITNESSES: Only the family but not sure if they experienced anything I did.

OTHER STORIES: no

TIME AND CONDITIONS: noon

ENVIRONMENT: forested golf course, to the east is part of the 18 hole course. To the west is woods.

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator John Ray:

I spoke with the witness for about an hour and he seemed very credible and repeated the details of the sighting without variation. He is an Iraq War veteran and is currently employed by the Seattle Police Department. During his lengthy military career he has been an Army Ranger and Special Operations Instructor in the Southern US.

During our conversation, the witness added that he thought he saw the outline of the side of the creature, which consisted of the head, shoulder, and arm as it stepped behind a tree. He said it looked like the head went right into the shoulders, and estimated the height of the creature to be about 7 feet tall.

He theorized that the creature might have been attracted to the children that were playing behind him, as they were laughing and yelling quite loudly during their game.

In the picture below, the Yellow X indicates the location of the witness, and the Red X indicates the location of the creature.

This incident occurred on the Tulalip Indian Reservation, which is on the shores of Puget Sound just West of the city of Marysville, Washington.
