NEAREST ROAD: Long hollow rd

OBSERVED: august 1984: When I was about 15, 3 of my friends and I were camping in the woods above my house we had two dogs a collie and a female husky. we had built a leanto to sleep under.
We were just talking about things girls and such when one of my friends let us know that he heard something we just laughed at him ,about 2 or three minutes later 2 of my friends claimed to have heard the same noise so the two of us that did not here it started making fun of them.
about 5 minutes after that our dogs started pacing back and forth and acting strange.
then all at once a loud yell came from behind the leanto and it shook hard i could see it visably shaking we all ran except for one and he froze and could not move. we ran through the pitch black woods hitting trees and running through briars. when we got out of the woods we turned and noticed that our friend was not with us we yelled for him and about 2 minutes later he came out of the woods carrying his collie in his arms.
I never knew what this thing was but my friend said that he could not see it but that he could here it behind him making a grunting sound as he sat in front of the fire and he could hear it behind him walking as he walked out of the woods some distance behind him. we went back the next day with an adult to retrieve our sleeping bags and things and our leanto had been torn down the rocks we had for the fire pit was scattered.the whole area smelled 10 X's worse than a wet dog.(when this thing yelled from behind our leanto it was super loud as if someone had loud speakers behind our leanto)

ALSO NOTICED: loud scream and shaking of our structure during the incident.
and a wet dog smell around our campsite as well as our structure torn down after the incident.

OTHER WITNESSES: 4 myself and 3 other friends ages from 14 to 16

OTHER STORIES: a couple of weeks later we were in a field about 1 mile from where this happened and we heard a huge tree fall and afterward the same loud scream about 200 yards from us up in the woods above the field. and never anything else after or since.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: dry no wind that i can remember a little chilly

ENVIRONMENT: on a ridge in the woods that would overlook the long hollow rd and some cow pastures

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Rolf G.:

The witness is an avid outdoorsman, hunter and boater. He served in the U.S. Army for five years. We spoke at length by phone about the vocalizations, scent and close proximity of the shelter movement. He was believable and very adamant in his description of the incident.

The area has agricultural fields, streams, a farm pond and a river within 2 miles. The area is within a couple miles of the Cherokee National Forrest.

The teenagers first noticed the foul smell a couple minutes before the vocalizations and shaking of the shelter. The dogs were acting strange. The scream was described as a moan scream that blasted from just behind the shelter at an incredibly loud frequency that lasted four to five seconds.

The last teen to get out of the woods carrying his dog, described a feeling of being paralyzed with fear at the campsite.
