(Show Printer-friendly Version)
YEAR: 1983
SEASON: Spring MONTH: March STATE: Washington COUNTY: Jefferson County LOCATION DETAILS: Chicken Coop Road and Highway 1, Opposite of Chicken Coop Road is Diamond Point and it turns into Craig Road South. NEAREST TOWN: Sequim NEAREST ROAD: Chicken Coop Road OBSERVED: After I read several articles of experiences I feel I should tell my story...
In 1983 I lived in an old cabin off of Chicken Coop Road and Highway 1 near Sequim. The cabin was very remote and there was a 200 acre tract behind us that was second growth forest and very lush. I remember the 4 to 5' ferns and very large trees. The outhouse was about 100' from the house and across a stream. When I walked out the door I untied my Rottweiler/Doberman mix so she could walk with me. She was a very protective dog and I always felt safe with her around. Well she immediately ran under the cabin and refused to come out. Then I heard the crashing through the small alders on my left and it sounded BIG. I immediately ran back into the cabin and got my husband. He ran out the front door and heard the crashing through the trees. Needless to say, I slept with a wooden baseball bat and my husband slept with a machete since we didn't have anything else. That next morning we investigated the area we heard the sounds from. The grove of small 4" alders that grew in that draw were broken off about 4' up from the bases of the trees. We found no tracks but there was a clear trail through that stand of trees. I don't what it was but I've been in the mountains most of my life and I'm familiar with most of the woodland creatures. I've never been so scared in my life and after 25 years and I remember very clearly as if it was yesterday. OTHER WITNESSES: 1 Witness was in the house. TIME AND CONDITIONS: Evening, Dark, Clear evening ENVIRONMENT: Pine, Douglas Fir, Spruce, Alder Forest.
Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Jim Von Lossow:
The witness and her husband are very outdoors oriented and familiar with wildlife and the sounds they make. After a phone conversation the following can be added.
The event happened after dark at 7pm in the evening. Late winter - early spring season. It had been a cold spell. The cabin where they lived was quite remote and only reachable by foot. They would park their car at the end of a dirt road and hike or wagon cart in their supplies.
Both dogs were guard type dogs and normally would alert the owners as to anything unknown approaching, including bear. This time they cowered under the porch and were 'terrified'. Both witnesses heard whatever it was crashing through the alder forest on the property. Finding numerous fresh tree snaps [alder] the next morning at 4' - 5' level along a pathway of flattened vegetation.
The overall experience was one she and her husband vividly remember and although no sighting took place, something definitely big did blast through their property that evening.
