Report # 17287  (Class A)
Submitted by witness on Friday, January 12, 2007.
Evening road crossing north of Panquitch
(Show Printer-friendly Version)

YEAR: 1997

SEASON: Fall

MONTH: November

STATE: Utah

COUNTY: Garfield County

LOCATION DETAILS: I was approx half way through circleville canyon on hwy 89, traveling south. It crossed the hwy to the sevier river.

NEAREST TOWN: Panguitch

NEAREST ROAD: Hwy 89

OBSERVED: I was driving home from college for a weekend visit with my family. It was dark, probably around 7 or 8 o'clock. I hadn't seen any other cars on the road for quite a while.
I was about halfway thru Circleville Canyon when just at the edge of my headlights I saw something big on the edge of the road. I started to slow down, didn't want to hit it should it run in front of me. But as I got closer it stood up & I thought for a second it was a person. Then it started running. It ran across the road approx 70 feet in front of my car. My heart was pounding. It was huge & hairy with long arms. It ran sort of bent over, but very quickly. But not human like, as it didn't bounce. It disappeared into the dark on the other side of the Hwy. I was far to scared to stop & see if there were any tracks or anything.

ALSO NOTICED: It ran very quickly across the road. I could tell that it was hairy, it looked very brown in the headlights. Long arms. but it didn't look in my direction. I never saw it's face.

OTHER WITNESSES: just myself

OTHER STORIES: In Smith Canyon (just over the ridge from Circlevill Canyon) I remember being up there when I was younger with my family camping & feeling like we were being watched.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: it was dark, around 7 or 8 pm, it was overcast & I was trying to get home before the storm hit. no moon, no stars.

ENVIRONMENT: It's a canyon with a small river in the bottom. But as you get higher there are cliffs & ridges. Not far up from the river there are pinyon & juniper that gradually turn into larger pine and aspen the farther up you go.

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator TF Zamiski:

I spoke with this witness on Wednesday 4/18/07 and have the following details to add.

Hwy 89 passes through the bottom of Circleville Canyon and along the Sevier River.

She described the biped as big and well built like a pro wrestler perhaps over 7' tall with no neck, long arms and dark brown hair. The animal moved quickly and with a very smooth gait as it crossed the road heading east toward the Sevier River.

Two distinct observations she offered; the hair was "kinda flowy" and not like fur. Also the gait was "smooth and not bouncy like a human".

The sighting lasted less than 30 seconds.
