Trail bike rider describes being briefly chased at night near Happy Camp
(Show Printer-friendly Version)
COUNTY: Siskiyou County
LOCATION DETAILS: Moderate to steep incline on the lift after passing a creek, and moderately wooded. On the right more gentle, and more heavily wooded. About a mile or two from a remote home.
NEAREST TOWN: happy camp
NEAREST ROAD: I believe I was on Elk Creek Road
OBSERVED: I was travelling down a couty road from a friends camp, and I was riding a small Honda motorbike. I got past a turn and heard something akin to a flat tire flopping. My bike is small enough that if it had a flat tire, I'd know it. I was doing about 15 mph and looked back after going around a right-hand curve crossing a creek. I saw what looked to be a hairy human figure, about 6-6 1/2' tall, running behind my bike. Scared the crap out of me, so I hit the thottle and did what I could to get out of there.
ALSO NOTICED: When I told others about this they would comment "oh, it's probrobly a bear playing with you." Yeah, RIGHT! I don't think so! Because a bear cannot run upright at 15+ mph! Maybe on all fours, but what I saw was upright.
OTHER WITNESSES: Just me, though I had no problem telling people I met in Happy Camp (a few friends and discussed it with a few folks at a cafe, and I think a sheriff's deputy).
OTHER STORIES: Yes, I have heard that it's not uncommon.
Many miners have reported their dredging equipment destroyed
TIME AND CONDITIONS: Night time. Weather was good but chilly. I beleive clear skies. The lighting was from my bike tail light.
ENVIRONMENT: Paved logging road in a moderately heavily forested area.

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Jimbo Fay:
I spoke with the witness by telephone for about 45 minutes the evening of 1/16/06. Witness states that the hair was approximately 4" long. He didn't get a long look at it but there was an almost full moon behind the ridge and the tail light of the motor bike, a 50cc Honda Spree, for decent illumination. The witness was so shocked and frightened he actually urinated in his pants. He also added that the arms looked basically proportional to human dimensions. It reminded him of a well built linebacker in a fur suit. In hind sight he thinks it was a juvenile just screwing around with him.
Witness is a lifelong Colorado/Wyoming resident who is very comfortable in wilderness and very familiar with N. Am. wildlife. He is employed as an oil field worker. On a side note he saw a Grizzly Bear in S. Utah where biologists insist there are none.
