Late night sighting by motorists near GA/SC border
(Show Printer-friendly Version)
YEAR: 2005
SEASON: Summer MONTH: July DATE: 9th STATE: South Carolina COUNTY: Allendale County LOCATION DETAILS: On rte 321 toward rte 301, near the SC/GA border NEAREST TOWN: not sure NEAREST ROAD: rte 321 OBSERVED: On July 9th we were driving from NYC through the Carolinas for a vacation with family members. While driving on 95 I missed my exit and continued on 95 til south of the border. We weren't sure if we missed our exit so we got off the highway and went to a gas station to ask for directions.
I was told to take Rte 301 off 95. This is in South Carolina. While on 301, about 10 minutes into it, I was driving at about 70-75 miles an hour when out of the dark, a black, hairy, tall thing crossed the road in front of us.
It was not a bear. It stood like a person with a slight bent. It had hair all over its body. I had to turn the wheel to the left to avoid hitting this thing. It almost hit the right side of my van. The screams inside my car were frightening. We almost lost control of our car.
I saw it, so did my wife, 2 aunts and my 7 seven year old granddaughter. It happened at about 12:30-12:45am, July 9th. OTHER WITNESSES: 5 people TIME AND CONDITIONS: night time, very little lighting, foggy and hot. ENVIRONMENT: Wooded, swampy, no houses nearby. Very little other traffic.
Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Rex B.:
The father of the family stated the sighting occurred around 1 in the morning. It was very dark.
As they were driving, they all saw the animal on the side of the road as it stepped onto the road to cross. It was taking its time. When he hit the brakes to avoid striking the animal, it turned to look at them and kind of sped up or skipped, to avoid getting hit. When they turned around inside the car to look at it, it was gone.
The witness estimated the animal’s height at 7 to 7 1/2 feet tall. It was muscular but not stocky.
The family is not originally from the US and did not know what it was. When they heard about the Manitoba footage they thought it might be the same kind animal.
