Daylight sighting by motorist outside Edmonton, on Highway 16 near Stony Plain
(Show Printer-friendly Version)
YEAR: 2005
SEASON: Spring MONTH: April PROVINCE: Alberta COUNTRY: Canada LOCATION DETAILS: It was north of Stony Plain. NEAREST TOWN: Edmonton NEAREST ROAD: Highway 16 OBSERVED:
My daughter (age 13) and I were traveling towards Edmonton when an animal came out of the bush by the Highway (on my right). I was watching it carefully to see if it was a deer and had others following it. It was the size and shape of a large chimp. It was light brown in color and was moving with a two armed swinging motion.
I was concerned enough that it may be an animal not meant to be loose, that I called a fish and wildlife officer. He was convinced that it was a bear cub. I have seen many bear cubs running and this was very different. It was much faster and there weren't the large paws that you would see with a bear cub. We watched as it crossed ahead of us towards the north and did not see a tail (even a tucked one). Could it have been a young sasquatch? ALSO NOTICED: we didn't stop. I wish now I had to looked for prints, but at the time we were a little stunned OTHER WITNESSES: My daughter who is 13 was watching it carefully also and afterwards asked what it was. She has seen a lot of animals also, and knew this was different. OTHER STORIES: No- I am wondering if anyone has ever seen something like this and if it is possible that it would be a young sasquatch. TIME AND CONDITIONS: It was late morning, overcast with a light drizzle ENVIRONMENT: There was bush fairly close to the divided highway on both the south and north sides.
Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Blaine McMillan :
I spoke to the witness by phone 13 Feb 2006. She was able to clearly recall the incident. She was travelling to Edmonton on Highway 16. It was around 10 am. The sky was overcast and drizzling. As she drove an animal came out of the scrub brush that parallels the road on the right hand side. At this point she was 200 meters away from it. She slowed her vehicle to anticipate a sudden stop. When she slowed it crossed 50 meters of open ground, across the divided highway moving from right to left. It disappeared into the scrub brush that borders on the north or west side of the highway.
She clearly observed it in profile. She surmised it was about three feet tall at the shoulder. It had a small head with no snout and no visible ears. It's hair colour was brownish red. She was adamant that it was running on all fours, with the ends of the front limbs not ending in paws like a bear but on folded hands much like a gorilla or chimpanzee. She said is very familiar bears of all sizes as she is a forestry worker. She is adamant that what she saw was no bear. She also had the impression that it was much faster than a bear cub.
