Man recalls a sasquatch watching he and a group of teenagers taking a walk while camping near Houghton Lake
(Show Printer-friendly Version)

YEAR: 1984

SEASON: Fall

MONTH: October

DATE: 3rd weekend

STATE: Michigan

COUNTY: Roscommon County

LOCATION DETAILS: My family would camp at the intersection one quarter section East of 18 and one quarter section North of Pond Rd. The sighting occurred on a dirt road, one quarter section North of our camp.

NEAREST TOWN: Meredith

NEAREST ROAD: Near Hwy. 18 and Pond Rd.

OBSERVED: While attending a family hunting trip, several of us were walking on a two track north of our camp. We were almost a quarter mile from camp, climbing a steep portion of the road.

Suddenly, the four of us stopped dead in our tracks. At the top of the two track, a large, dark figure stood in the middle of the road staring at us.

The thing was quite tall, and very broad across the chest. The arms were longer than a man, and it seemed frozen as it looked at us. I could not make out any features, but am certain that it was not a person. It looked more like one of the drawings or statues I have seen on the net or in books.

After what seemed like forever (it was probably only a minute or so) we turned and ran back to camp. I am not sure what the thing at the top of the hill did, but we didn't stick around.

Several years later, a few of us discussed this sighting, and those who aren't necessarily believers in Bigfoot had no explaination as to what we saw.

We

ALSO NOTICED: Large pushed in footprints in the general area of the sighting. The depressions were in soft gravel/sand and were not well defined.

OTHER WITNESSES: There were four of us all 13 or 14 years old.

OTHER STORIES: I hunted and camped at this location from 1984 until the early 2000s. I have three other incidents that could be worth noting.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: It was early afternoon on an overcast, cool fall day.

ENVIRONMENT: Up until the late 90's, the area was hardwoods with some wet areas. There were also pines mixed in the area. The area has since been clear cut, and is nothing like it used to be. This area is located a quarter mile from the Mid Forest Lodge preserve, which is a large, private hunting/camping area.

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Don Peer:

I spoke at length with the witness by telephone. He stated that he and the witnesses were around 13 or 14 at the time. He states he has since talked with the other witness since then and they all remember the same details. None of the witnesses have any other explanation of what they saw. The witness is now 38 years old.

They were camped with several family members and decided to take a walk, exploring a two track that ran north from their camp. They came to a part of the two track that ran up a steep hill and when they looked up to the top of the hill, they saw the figure standing at the top, in the middle of the trail. He described it as massive, with very broad shoulders, Dark brown hair that was a uniform color and long arms that hung down, almost to the knees. He estimates the height at between 7 and 8 feet tall and the weight around 500 pounds.

He stated that they watched it for about 2 minutes and then got scared and turned and ran back to their camp, which was about a quarter mile away. They did not look back to see what the animal did, but didn't feel it followed them. This is the only sighting the witness had there, although he returned several times to hunt there over the years. Upon further trips to hunt the area over the years, the witness stated that a few times he heard strange screams at night that he could not identify as belonging to any animal he knew of. The area has since been logged and a large forest fire burned several hundred acres just to the north of the location. I am very familair with the location, as it is not far from my house and I grew up riding dirt bikes in the area.

This is a heavily forested area surrounding the clear cut areas and the clear cut areas have a good regrowth. The area has a large population of deer and other wildlife.
