Children have daytime close encounter near Sparta; UPDATED with Witness Sketch
(Show Printer-friendly Version)

YEAR: 1977

SEASON: Summer

DATE: 1977

COUNTY: Morrow County

LOCATION DETAILS: about 1 mile from sparta down 61 towards mt vernon, on your left the property is owned by the fedders now. it has been 23 yrs since ive been there.

NEAREST ROAD: route 61

ALSO NOTICED: the only thing i can add to that is that i saw her very vividley and i could see that it was a female because her breast hung down to her stomach and her colors were red brown and black hair, skin was a dull grey she had bare spots on her knees and chest and she was repulsive to look at her eyes were black and stared right through you.

OTHER STORIES: i have heard that some kids say they saw a large dark figure in there yards picking apples.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: 10 am on a pathway through our property about 300 yds into the woods. in sparta ohio in morrow co. i was about 10 yrs old and was walking with my cousin and little brother. the lighting was good but i never would have seen them if the small one hadnt moved. they were about 40 yds off to my right standing right by a tree. it was a large female about 7-5 ft tall and a little one about 5-5. she was watching us and when i finally saw her it was very disturbing the smell was that of dead animals, and she stared right through me. i pointed them out to brad and when i did, she took a step in our direction. well we took off running for the house and when we reached the back yard we heard large branches being broken and a long howling like a low pitched airraid siren. it scared the hell out of me. anyway that weekend i went to my grandparents to get away from there and while i was gone my mother said that something hit the back of the trailer at night which shook the home, and then they heard footsteps running off into the woods, followed by some stange sounds. now i have heard that people say they are not dangerous but i feel they are very capable of doing harm to people and probably will if cornered.

ENVIRONMENT: area was wooded back then with some wetland not much also the farmer behind our property at that time had done some clearing on his property not more than 20ft from where i saw her.

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Matthew Moneymaker:

[Update by Matt Moneymaker]

This sketch was provided by one of the witnesses. It is a better depiction of their face structure than you will see in most sketches, which are typically made by non-witness artists.

The depiction of the eyes -- the big, dark, spooky, wide-open eyes -- is right on.

Sasquatches do not have a squinting appearance, like people who spend most of their waking hours in direct sunlight. Sasquatch eyes are big, dark and always wide, wide open, as you see in this witness sketch.

As they grow older their brow ridge protrudes a bit more, making their eyes appear more sunken, but still big, black and wide open.

There is something owl-like about their expression, something that strongly speaks of a nocturnal lifestyle. They look as though they are built for the night.

[Original interview by Kathy Moskowitz]

I spoke with the witness by phone. The following details can be added to the report:

The family owned 12 acres of very wooded, undeveloped land off of State Highway 229. There had never been any incidents prior to this date, until the land owner behind this property began clearing his land.

When the kids were walking down the footpath, the witness was the first to see the bigfoot, about 15-20 yards away. The bigfoot appeared to be a female with a small juvenile with her. The juvenile appeared scared, and had his head snuggled close into his mother's side, his arms around her waist. When she saw them, she took a step toward them, bared her teeth and growled/grunted at them. The kids panicked and started running through the trees. The bigfoot chased them back to the trailer, all the while screaming and beating trees with what sounded like branches in order to intimidate them.

A very detailed description of the female includes:
--she had a coconut-shaped head, brows were protruded;
--hair over her body was short, but thick;
--her breasts were large, and not covered by hair, their skin was gray-black;
--her legs were as big around as tree trunks and her arms the size of a man's leg;
--her knees and elbows were calloused and devoid of skin;
--her eyes were coal black, no whites in the eyes at all;
--hair covered face up to cheek bones; nose, eyes and cheeks were devoid of hair;
--Patterson file was very close, but eyes in this experience seemed larger.

Other incidents: their water pump was damaged; they found dead, mutilated deer hanging in trees that had been ripped open and their necks broken (possibly stashed there for later use?); and they found some structures that resembled stick igloos, covered with leaves and other waste material that smelled very bad (appeared to be habitation structures).
