Various late night vocalizations heard on a property near Flagstaff
(Show Printer-friendly Version)

YEAR: 2006

SEASON: Summer

MONTH: July

DATE: 3

STATE: Arizona

COUNTY: Coconino County

LOCATION DETAILS: [Editor's note: Witness requested us not to publish the directions.]

NEAREST TOWN: Flagstaff

NEAREST ROAD: highway 89A

OBSERVED: On this particular night I was awakened by a commotion outside my bedroom window. It sounded like animals fighting. There are many wild animal species in the forest where I live including racoons, skunks, foxes, and elk, but also domestic animals like dogs and cats. I assumed the noise was coming from some of these animals. After I sat up in my bed, the noise stopped. I lay back down, and after several minutes I heard some very peculiar noises. First, there was a series of "whoops" that sounded like a cross between a monkey's whoop and a whistle. They seemed to be coming from different locations within about a 50 foot radius. They were neither particularly loud, nor soft. It sounded to me like 2 or 3 individuals. Trying to come up with a rational candidate for the type of animal, I imagined it might be some sort of large migratory bird. This is when I heard the second type of sound, something like a pig grunting but different. It seemed as if there were articulation in the grunting. It is difficult to describe, but it made my blood run cold. The grunting seemed to come from only one animal, and was clearly audible. This went on for perhaps a minute. The area was then illuminated by a passing car and all sounds immediatley ceased. Several minutes later I heard a loud "crack" from a large branch being broken in the woods at the edge of my yard. I did not get out of bed or attempt to look outside as I was still quite frankly scared from the creepy nature of the grunting. The next morning I looked around the immediate area of my yard, but found no indication of what may have made the sounds.

ALSO NOTICED: As an afterthought I recall that earlier that evening I had been out breaking off some low hanging branches in the area, to reduce fire risk.

OTHER WITNESSES: None of which I am aware.

OTHER STORIES: No.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: Noises began at around 12:10 AM. Some moonlight present, but otherwise dark.

ENVIRONMENT: Dense poderosa pine forest.

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator TF Zamiski:

This is an interesting report in that this occured outside a residence in a small community bordering the forest. There is the potential for more activity. I have a couple of comments to add after I spoke with the witness.

He spoke with two neighbors after the incident, both heard the sounds. One gentleman mentioned that he heard similar sounds about 6 months prior.

The witnessed searched the Internet to try to find the source of the vocalizations. He listened to alleged sasquatch sound bites and found some similar recordings. He emailed three sound bites to me. One of the sounds was the rapid fire laughter from the Sierra Sounds CD which is a very intense vocalization. This sound and another of garbled chatter are the closest he could find to the articulating grunting he heard and found difficult to describe in his report. During our discussion he used the words growling, grunting and garbled rapid speech to describe this vocalization.

The reference to him breaking off branches to remove fire hazard was relevant in that it made some loud cracks that could have been heard out into the forest. He wondered if the loud cracking contributed to the late night visit.
