Area residents hear repeated loud vocalizations

YEAR: 1993

SEASON: Summer

MONTH: August

STATE: Oregon

COUNTY: Washington County

LOCATION DETAILS: Beaverton; Off of 163rd Place, nearest cross street Davis- close to Murray Blvd.

OBSERVED: Heard extremely loud howl or call; started off low and then would go higher then carry off (like a peacock makes only a lower, harder vocalization); sounded like from a very large animal- was very loud; would do these howls over and over again for about 30 seconds. Dogs in area would bark and howl while this was going on and they seemed generally agitated until it stopped.

ALSO NOTICED: If this is pertinent: one of the trees behind us in the forested area was "broken down" and it fell onto our back deck and broke it: my father said that he could hear the tree "shaking" and he thought it sounded like something was in it, and whatever it was, it was very large. Then it "pushed off" and the tree cracked and fell over through the fence and onto the deck. My father did not see anything, although he kept insisting that he thought it was a "man up in the tree," because of the movement that the tree was making. He wanted to shine a flashflight up into the tree, but the incident happened too fast apparently for him to see what it was....I did the see the damage the tree made; it was quite a large tree for a coon or smaller mammal to uproot and cause it to fall- they also said that they heard the "howling" a couple of nights earlier. This was and has been the last time any of us has had any sounds or experiences.

OTHER WITNESSES: Sometimes we were just sitting in the living room watching TV or we were already in bed if it started after midnight.

OTHER STORIES: No, none that I know of. I talked to some of the neighbors, and they didn't seem interested into what was making the noise or what it was; only that it comes through here occasionally.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: Summer months- July, August, September all that year Always at night when it was dark, probably after 12:00 a.m. Sporadic- heard quite a few times, maybe about 1/2 dozen.

ENVIRONMENT: Behind our street- forested treed area but not sure where or how far this forest goes- would hear the vocalization in this area- our backyard backs up to the trees.
