Report # 76534  (Class B)
Submitted by witness on Friday, October 20, 2023.
Howls heard after midnight by resident between Botsford and Upper Stepney

YEAR: 2023

SEASON: Fall

MONTH: October

DATE: 17

STATE: Connecticut

COUNTY: Fairfield County

LOCATION DETAILS: [Investigator MM notes: The GPS coordinates for location of the witness when he heard the howls: 41.338269,-73.261060

NEAREST TOWN: Monroe

NEAREST ROAD: 25

OBSERVED: I heard repeated short duration screaming/long-duration whooping after midnight on 17th of October. This went on for about five to ten minutes.

Coordinates for my location are 41.338269,-73.261060. The sound direction seemed as it was from the Northeast of coords. It was not a bobcat/fox/coyote. I live out west, CA to be specific, and I'm well aquainted with coyotes, bobcats, and cougars and their vocalizations. This voice had quite a bit of 'power' behind it and I could tell that it was carried over distance. I would 'rough' guesstimate at least two klicks from my coords.

Vocal pattern would be roughly 10 seconds of vocalization then stop. This repeated four or five times that I was aware of. It may have been going on prior to me noticing it.

All the dogs in the area started barking at once when the vocalizations ended. Normally there are many owls in the area and when I had gone outside previously I could hear them.

When I had noticed the vocalizations had ended it was probably a good ten minutes before I could hear the owls again.

I've previously heard several of the vocalization recordings on YouTube. These seem to match a couple/few that I've heard before.

OTHER WITNESSES: None

TIME AND CONDITIONS: Occured after midnight. Weather conditions were clear to partly cloudy.

ENVIRONMENT: Forested
