Deer hunters report loud whoops at night 8 miles northwest of Nocona

YEAR: 2021

SEASON: Winter

MONTH: December

DATE: 21st

STATE: Texas

COUNTY: Montague County

LOCATION DETAILS: [Investigator (MM) Notes:
The hunting camp described in this report is on a private hunting lease. The camp is a quarter miles northeast of Belknap Creek Bridge. This bridge is eight (8) miles northeast of Alcona.
GPS coordinates for the bridge:
33.847384, -97.844681

NEAREST TOWN: Nocona

NEAREST ROAD: 287

OBSERVED: We were on a deer lease in Texas that was connected to the Red River. There was a road that split the lease and we stayed in a tent on the north side of the road.

The river ran under the road from south to north and a creek ran from it going east to west. The creek was about 20 yards north of our tent. We heard whooping calls south of the road on the river that slowly made their way past the road and up the creek 20 yards from our tent. We then heard growling and movement. I then fell asleep out of fear and here I am as a Texas hunter reporting it.

The sounds were identical to the Sierra Sounds and terrified me but i'm curious now.

ALSO NOTICED: Night time was dead quiet and usually there are cows mooing and coyotes howling.

OTHER WITNESSES: 2, my dad and i were awake.

OTHER STORIES: No i don't know the locals well.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: 11pm to 3am, dry and covered in dead leaves

ENVIRONMENT: Small patches of forest with open plains and small rivers.

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Gary Christensen:

I initially spoke with the son who submitted this report. He could not add much to the written report. Although terrified, he fell asleep while the vocalizations were still occurring. He suggested that I speak with his father, who might provide additional details.

Several months later, I was finally able to contact his father. After introducing myself, the father was more than willing to provide a much more complete picture of what had occurred on the night of their encounter.

In addition to the written report, he provided these details:

The whooping started off from far away and continually got louder as the individual got closer. The woods went very silent during this time. The whooping lasted for over an hour and concluded with a powerful, deep growl that the father said he could feel in his gut.

He estimated the creature was no more than 30 yards away. He said that he is not frightened in the woods, but this growl shook him, and he drew his .44 magnum revolver wondering what might happen next. Nothing else occurred that night after the growl.

Other members of his extended family also hunt this lease, and have reported occurrences that they could not explain. On one occasion, one brother-in-law had placed a portable blind near camp that he intended to use the next day. When he returned in the morning, the blind was gone. After a long search, he found the blind up in tree some distance away. There had been no wind to explain how it could have moved.

On another occasion a permanent fixed ground blind was found tipped over. It took 2 men to lift it upright. Another brother-in-law reported something very large jumping out of a cottonwood tree and running off.

I found both the father and the son to be very forthcoming and sincere in describing the frightening encounter that they shared.
