YEAR: 1997
SEASON: Fall
MONTH: October
DATE: 13
STATE: Michigan
COUNTY: Delta County
LOCATION DETAILS: Just outside of Gladstone, heading east towards Rapid River on Highway 2 & 41
NEAREST TOWN: Gladstone & Rapid River Michigan
NEAREST ROAD: US Highway 2 & 41
OBSERVED: In October of 1997, I was returning home from work on US Highway 2 / 41 just outside of Gladstone, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. I got off work at 5, picked up my kids from daycare, stopped at the local sub shop and headed out of town. My son was in the front seat with me and my daughters were in the back. We had just left Gladstone City limits on the four lane highway heading northeast to our hometown of Rapid River, when I noticed what I thought was a hunter crouched down on the opposite side of the median of the highway.
I was the only car heading that direction. There were two cars heading southwest in the other lanes. As I approached I said to my son, “Look at that stupid hunter ... Why is he just sitting there?”
As we got closer the “man” or now I say creature stood up… It was brown colored just like the grass which in October in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan everything turns brown. It crossed the highway with a couple steps. It then was on the other side of the highway within seconds. As I passed it put its arms down to its sides and stepped into the woods and it was gone.
I have lived in the Upper Peninsula my whole life. I am a logger’s daughter. I have spent countless hours in the woods. I have seen bears, deer, wolves, coyotes, almost every living creature here in the UP. I own horses and this thing moved Faster and more graceful than a horse at a full gallop. My mind raced after I saw this looking for the logical answer of what this could be…..and the only thing it could have been was a Bigfoot.
I cannot describe how big this creature was, how long its arms were and how fast it moved and disappeared into the woods.
Even though very close to town this area is very swampy and no people live here. But I have to say that two days after I saw the creature it was reported on the local radio station that a bigfoot was spotted on the same highway and the DJ made fun of the report. This is why I never reported it to anyone…. Wish you guys were around when this happened.
All I know is that to this day, every time I drive past that spot I think of the creature I saw that day. I know that I will go to my grave knowing that I saw one of nature’s greatest secrets.
OTHER WITNESSES: My son...we were in the car
OTHER STORIES: Yes, but none so close to town.
TIME AND CONDITIONS: Almost Dusk...rainy...
ENVIRONMENT: Swampy, not too far from Lake Michigan
Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Rich Meyer:
I spoke with Kristin on the phone this evening, almost 10 years after she reported the sighting and almost 24 years after the actual sighting. One of the very first things she said was she remembers it like it was yesterday and then started to tell me about what happened that day. She also updated the location as the highway has changed due to Road Construction in the last decade, with changed to the median, emergency exits and crossover roads. Kristin said she now understands how the Bigfoot was able to just disappear as it stepped into the tag alders as there is a fence there with an opening in that spot. The fence and the opening were not visible at the time of the sighting but with the changes to the highway and shoulders it is now visible. This report predates other published reports in the same area.

The area has sufficient cover, food and water for Bigfoots and other large predators native to the area.
